Developing NILGA Policy

Representing the 'Voice of Local Government' NILGA seeks to promote, strengthen and modernise the sector. The development of a strong policy agenda is one of the key priorities of NILGA in achieving Local Government Modernisation.

NILGA policy is developed by a number of recently redesigned working groups overseen by a Strategic Policy Committee, reporting to the NILGA Executive Committee. We work on a number of key policy issues identified as important to local government in Northern Ireland. The working groups are charged, in cooperation with relevant professional officer groupings, with developing policy positions proactively, and also with responding to government consultations identified as priority for the sector. More recently the groups have been focussing on building relationship with the corresponding Assembly committees, taking part in inquiries and giving evidence.

NILGA has also developed agreed positions in Key Policy Areas to ensure the local government voice is heard in a range of relevant policy consultations.
