About NILGA

Vision
NILGA's vision is to grow as a fraternal LGA organisation, representing the Voice of Local Government and facilitating the development of the sector.

Representing the ‘Voice of Local Government’ NILGA seeks to promote, strengthen and modernise the sector.  The Association is supported by all 5 main political parties and 25 Councils in Northern Ireland.  The organisation:

  • Provides a forum for debate,
  • Develops policy positions for the local government sector based on the best available policy advice,
  • Facilitates the relationship between Government and the sector,
  • Provides cost effective services on behalf of the sector, and
  • Seeks opportunities to develop and promote the sector generally.

What We Do
NILGA exists to promote better local government.  NILGA is currently committed to pursuing the following priorities:

    • Strengthen the capacity of the sector.
    • Develop a strong policy agenda for modernised local government.
    • Build effective working relationships to achieve a common purpose within the sector.

Our Work To Date
NILGA successfully operates in a complex stakeholder environment where there are competing interests from councils, government, parties and professional groupings.
